High cholesterol can lead to a buildup of fatty plaque in your arteries called atherosclerosis. But where exactly does atherosclerosis occur and what problems can it cause?
I recently wrote an article on this topic for GoodRx.
Here are the high points:
- Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to your arms, legs, head, and the rest of your body. You can feel your arterial pulse on your wrist.
- Atherosclerosis can clog up the arteries and decrease blood flow to several parts of your body
- Common sites for atherosclerosis are the arteries that feed the heart itself, brain, legs, and kidneys
- Atherosclerosis can also cause an aneurysm (enlarged bulging) in the main artery in your abdomen, called the aorta.
